Clean Up

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

Cleaning is something that needs to be done often. Whether it's cleaning a room in the house, the car, dishes or closet, they require care. When something has not been cleaned for a while, we start to notice. Things start piling up, either in one big pile or mini piles all over. Things start to smell. Spots on dirty dishes start becoming noticeable. When things are piled up, they take up space where something else could be placed. When things start to smell around the house or in the car, it puts unwanted odors in the atmosphere. If dishes have stains on them and aren't clean, no new food can be placed on them until the stains have been removed. And think about after a car has been washed and cleaned out inside. It looks like you have a brand new car! In general after cleaning, everything looks good. But getting started though can be the hard part, right?! I'm with you!! If we take that much time caring for earthly possessions, what about having our heart clean? In Psalm 51, David is praying to God. In verse 10 mentioned at the beginning, he asks God to clean his heart and renew a right spirit in him. To renew means to make new again. David confessed to God that he needed Him. Can I tell you a secret?! So do we! David knew he had done wrong and needed to make things right with God. We should also want to be right with God. That requires us asking God for a clean heart. When we ask God to clean our heart, we're asking him to take out everything not pleasing to Him. We're asking Him to make us new. Whatever has piled up and caused clutter to be in our heart, we need it sorted and removed when necessary. Whatever has spotted or tainted our heart, we need to ask God to clean. All clutter and things weighing us down need to go. It takes honesty and a good look to admit that something needs to be cleaned out and change needs to take place. One day not long ago, I was sitting at our kitchen counter, which we usually wipe down every day. That day, I noticed there were two spots on the counter that had been missed. Now I had stood at the counter a few minutes earlier (note that I was standing at a different place), but had not noticed the spots. It wasn't until I sat at a different angle I noticed the spots. The sun was coming in through the window just right and exposed them. I took care of them after I saw. Could it be that we haven't let God's Word (the light- see Psalm 119:105) expose what needs to be cleaned out of us? Could it be that we need to look at our heart from a different angle through God's Word? Just like there were spots we missed on the counter, we have to make sure not to miss anything and leave no trace of wrong in our heart. We should want to take care of our hearts. Remember a clean heart begins with caring. Every day, let's make Psalm 51:10 our daily prayer. We need help and God wants to help. God wants to clean us from the inside out.
